On 11 May 1944, just weeks before the historic D-Day landings, American heavy bombers attacked the French town of Épinal on the Moselle River. The bombing unintentionally destroyed the walls of a temporary prisoner-of-war camp housing more than 3,000 Indian soldiers.

Taking advantage of the chaos, hundreds of Indian prisoners seized the opportunity to escape. Carrying only basic supplies, food and clothing, they began a desperate journey towards Switzerland, a neutral country where they hoped to find safety.

Their path to freedom was filled with unimaginable challenges. They had to cross more than 100 kilometres of French countryside while avoiding Nazi forces, collaborators and hostile territories that stood between them and safety.
