A LIFE IN THREE OCTAVES: THE MUSICAL JOURNEY OF GANGUBAI HANGAL
A Life in Three Octaves is the first-ever portrait of Gangubai Hangal, one of India’s greatest Hindustani classical music vocalists. This intimate and beautifully crafted biography explores her extraordinary journey from a young girl fascinated by gramophone music to a legendary artiste who transformed the landscape of Indian classical music.
📖 About the Book
As a child in Dharwad, Gangu found herself enchanted by the magical world of music emerging from gramophone players at local tea stalls. She would run from one stall to another, eagerly requesting records of legendary singers like Zohrabai, and happily sing the songs she had learnt from her mother in exchange for hearing more music.
Born in 1913 into a family with a rich musical heritage, Gangubai Hangal’s artistic journey truly began when she became a disciple of the legendary musician Sawai Gandharva at the age of seventeen. Under his guidance, she developed her distinctive voice and emerged as one of the most respected performers of Hindustani classical music.
Gangubai’s life was also a journey of transformation. Coming from the devadasi community, she overcame social barriers to establish herself on prestigious concert stages, radio platforms and recording studios. Her story reflects both personal resilience and the changing cultural landscape of India.
Inspired by figures like Mahatma Gandhi and shaped by the evolving world of Indian music, Gangubai balanced the richness of tradition with the possibilities of modernity. Her music carried a rare harmony between discipline and individuality, heritage and innovation.
Through a warm and deeply researched narrative, A Life in Three Octaves captures the many dimensions of Gangubai Hangal’s life—the artiste, the woman and the cultural icon whose powerful voice continues to inspire generations.
