Amol Palekar describes himself as an actor by accident, a director by choice and a painter by nature. After completing his postgraduate studies at the Sir J.J. School of Arts, Mumbai, he began his artistic journey as a painter in 1967 while working at the Bank of India.

A chance encounter with legendary theatre personality Satyadev Dubey introduced him to the world of avant-garde theatre. His memorable performances in plays such as Chup! Court Chalu Hai (1968), Adhe Adhure (1969) and Hayavadana (1972) established him as a significant presence in Indian theatre.

Alongside acting, Palekar explored theatre direction and production, working on acclaimed productions including Vallabhpurchi Dantakatha, Pagla Ghoda, Juloos and Party. In 1972, he founded his own theatre group, Aniket, and created innovative productions that moved beyond traditional theatre spaces into gardens, garages, canteens, foyers and open areas.

As a film actor, Palekar became one of the most loved faces of Indian cinema, ruling the screen for over three decades from the 1970s. He later moved into filmmaking, making his directorial debut with the Marathi film Akriet (1980).

Known for his sensitive portrayal of women, thoughtful adaptations of literary works and exploration of progressive themes, Palekar has directed fifteen feature films in Hindi, Marathi and English, many of which received state, national and international recognition.

Amol Palekar is an acclaimed Indian actor, director and producer of films, plays and television series in Hindi and Marathi. Born on 24 November 1944, he is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema and theatre.

His most successful Hindi films include Gol Maal, Chitchor, Rajnigandha, Gharaonda, Rang Birangi and Chhoti Si Baat.

His celebrated theatre works include Chup! Court Shaant Hai!, Pagla Ghoda, Hayavadana, Suno Janmejay, Juloos and Gochi.

As a filmmaker, he has directed internationally acclaimed and award-winning films such as Kairee, Ankahee, Bangarwadi, Daayra and Paheli, which was selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards (Oscar) in 2006.

He has also directed television serials including Kachchi Dhoop, Mrignayani and Krishnkali. In 2000, Palekar returned to his first passion, painting.
