RAMA BHIMA SOMA - Cultural Investigations Into Modern Karnataka

Rama Bhima Soma is a fascinating exploration of modern Karnataka’s cultural, literary and political landscape. Blending history, reportage and literary inquiry, the book examines the movements, personalities and ideas that have shaped the state’s identity and social consciousness.

📖 About the Book

Karnataka is a land of extraordinary diversity, known for its rich literary traditions, cultural movements and democratic struggles. In Rama Bhima Soma, Srikar Raghavan embarks on an ambitious journey to understand the region’s complex history, driven by a desire to reconnect with his linguistic and cultural roots.

Through conversations, research and rediscovery, the book traces the making of modern Karnataka—from the rise of the Kannada renaissance in the twentieth century to the political and social transformations that continue to influence the state today.

The narrative explores the lives and contributions of iconic figures such as Kuvempu, Shivaram Karanth, U.R. Ananthamurthy, D.R. Nagaraj and M.M. Kalburgi. It also examines the decline of socialism, the rise of the Hindu Right, the impact of television culture through T.N. Seetharam’s popular serials and the community-driven theatre of Du Saraswathi.

From the history of Naxalism in Karnataka to the complicated legacies of the Left movements of the 1970s, the book presents a wide-ranging study of ideas, identities and social change.

Combining literary criticism, historical research, biographical sketches and immersive reportage, Rama Bhima Soma brings forgotten conversations back into focus and offers a thoughtful portrait of Karnataka’s modern cultural journey.
