📖 About the Book

The Sampark Kranti Express travels from Thiruvananthapuram to Chandigarh, carrying a vintage steam engine named Wanderer, which is destined to be displayed at the Republic Day parade in Delhi. On this journey across the length of India, the train becomes a miniature representation of the nation itself.

Among the passengers is Karamchand, named after Mahatma Gandhi, who embarks on a unique parallel journey through his observations, memories and reflections on the history of the places the train crosses. His thoughts connect personal experiences with India's complex historical and social narratives.

The novel revisits significant moments in Indian history, including the arrival and expansion of British railways, Portuguese attacks on Kerala’s ports, the 1857 uprising, the Chauri Chaura incident and the Godhra riots.

The diverse passengers on the train include John, a British wildlife photographer; three travelling ticket examiners; an Indian woman carrying a Pakistani man's child; a rape survivor working as a sex worker; Gujarati pilgrims returning from Rameshwaram; and Narendra Dabholkar, with whom Karamchand discusses ideas of nation and nationalism.

Addressing pressing issues such as reservation, farmer suicides, caste, class and gender inequality, The Wanderer presents India through the metaphor of a train—a place where different lives, struggles and identities exist together. Karamchand’s observation that “a train is a small biopsy section of India” captures the essence of this powerful and thought-provoking novel.

✍️ About the Author

V. Shinilal is a popular contemporary Malayalam novelist and short story writer from Nedumangad, near Thiruvananthapuram. He works with the Indian Railways and is known for his powerful storytelling and exploration of social and political themes.

His major works include novels such as Udal Bhauthikam, Adi, 124 and Iru, along with acclaimed short story collections including Chola, Buddhapadham and Naroda Patyayil Ninnulla Bus.

Shinilal has received several prestigious literary honours, including the inaugural Karoor Award, Padmarajan Award and the O.V. Vijayan Award. Sampark Kranti (The Wanderer) received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Best Novel in 2022.

🌐 About the Translator

Nandakumar K. is an acclaimed translator whose co-translation of M. Mukundan’s Delhi Gadhakal (Delhi: A Soliloquy) won the JCB Prize for Literature in 2021.

His other translations include A Thousand Cuts by Professor T.J. Joseph, The Lesbian Cow and Other Stories by Indu Menon, In the Name of the Lord by Sr Lucy Kalappura, and works by authors such as Vinoy Thomas and Haritha Savithri.

The grandson of Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon, Nandakumar lives in Dubai and works in the shipping industry while continuing his literary translation work.
